The Crawford House

Crawford House is a well-constructed, five-story residential community located on a prominent corner in downtown Portsmouth, Virginia. The property was formerly a 1960s-era office building and previously served as a Wells Fargo office. As market conditions evolved and demand for office space declined, the building was repositioned and thoughtfully renovated for residential use.
The redevelopment resulted in 46 upscale urban apartment homes featuring quiet, concrete construction and a strong amenity offering. A rooftop indoor/outdoor lounge provides expansive city views, while a newly installed elevator offers convenient access to the penthouse-level club space.
The first floor includes a spacious clubhouse with a pool table, full kitchen, business center, game room, fitness facility, outdoor patio with grill, mail center, package room, and full restrooms. Apartment homes on floors one through five feature high-end finishes, including stainless steel appliances, full-size washers and dryers, granite countertops, premium flooring, and modern technology. Deep window wells create comfortable seating niches, and upper-level residences enjoy water views and vistas of Norfolk.
Parking is ample, with one dedicated space per resident in a private lot, direct access to a 400-space municipal parking garage located immediately behind the building, and additional on-street parking for guests. Ideally situated between the Olde Towne Historic District and the High Street commercial corridor, Crawford House is one block from the waterfront and within walking distance of shops, restaurants, museums, theaters, and historic homes, offering a boutique living experience in one of Portsmouth’s most walkable neighborhoods.
The defining aspect of this project was its scope: a near-complete renovation that included encapsulating the entire structure with a new exterior skin. The property leased up quickly, benefiting from its location directly across the street from the Mid-Atlantic Headquarters of the U.S. Coast Guard and its proximity to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. The redevelopment was completed as a joint venture with local ownership, supported by the infusion of new capital.
